>_ enkihost enters the room...

Hi there y'all!

Remember the magic of when you first heard about Heroku? Or used it?

In my case was "watched"!

At that time I was still a C/C++ developer using a windows laptop, sshing into Solaris machines, and writing code with vi or a text editor via sftp.

It was in a conference in Northern Virginia, USA, organized by some folks from the Java community in the DMV that I first heard about Heroku!

I do not recall, if at that time, I had already learned about Rails or not. Not how I, a C/C++ developer, ended up in that conference.

IIRC it was called Dev Ignition, and not for a particular stack or technology. It must have been curiosity!

One of the speakers were presenting Heroku!

That was the moment I've decided backend C/C++ was a thing of the past for me, and next was web development.

My first web app though, was Java and DOJO, with ajax calls for a SMS-911 prototype.

The second was CMAS prototype, also using Java.

BTW: git was not the source control used for those apps... And I am not even get there...

But the magic for me was a CLI command from laptop to the web, that made my eyes pop!

This conference also had someone presenting a text editor for Software development entirely on the browser, on http://localhost:<some_port>!

That web magic was what the old C/C++ developer in me desired, dreamed of. I recall clearly thinking: I am good at CLI and bash! I am going to have a ton of fun! 🤣

This story might sounds familiar if you, like me, were starting or doing web development around the time Heroku came along, and Ruby, Rails, Github...

Till this day I am still doing web-development, not like the good old days, but still using Ruby and Rails. Even the JS ecosystem has somehow cooled down and as much I'd like to use Vue.js, React has been the one I used the most!

But I am here on my corner of the planet, on seat 34D, remembering all this because I want to talk about enkihost!

enkihost is actually hosting the room it just entered!

In this day and age, this somewhat old Software Engineer, did not have any hope until enkihost decided to show up, to enter the room, say Hi, and host it!

And for me, it came at the exact time I had decided to move the cloud provider of my side projects.

So decision made! And the provider has been selected!

So I'd like to make an annoucement: all my side projects is moving to enkihost!

And the migration of the first one has started! And the app was up and running super fast, with a PG DB, and available at <my_app>.enkihost.com!

And here, from my seat 34D, I still can't wrap my head around the feeling of deploying a web app to the cloud, just like the early days, and entirely because of the company hosting it!

As I was creating strenght to write again (check the history here, look around the world, the industry...), I was wondering if this blog title should be I found a reason to write again, or there is still hope, or the magic is back, or something is in the air, or what...

But back to what matters: I am on a path to move one of my side projects to enkihost, and the first app has been created already.

My (this) blog will follow!

My consulting company website will delete all others and list only enkihost! :-D

Another side project will follow. And I am motivated to work again in one of my side projects that is still a rough concept! :exploding_head:

Anyway, if you have a side project, ruby, rails, jekyll, and you are shopping for a small tech hosting, I certainly recomment to give enkihost a try! To me it felt magical in a way I would never expected. To me it felt like there is still hope in the galaxy after all!

If you run into any issue, I am sure Albert Oliva will help, but feel free to hit me up as well (I am just/already an user but I will enjoy chatting about it)!

And in the event you liked it, say Hi on or by (the good and old fashioned) ! :-D
